Hi friends,
We’re Robert and Erika Novak, your cruise-loving travel advisors at Novak Travel.
Over the years, we’ve sailed all kinds of itineraries—from short getaways to week-long adventures in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska—and we’ve helped hundreds of others do the same. Through it all, we’ve learned that there’s a lot to know when it comes to cruising—some things you’ll figure out over time, and others you’ll wish you knew before you even stepped on board.
So we’re pulling together our best advice. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, here are 25 of our top tips to help you cruise smarter, smoother, and more confidently.
Before You Cruise
1. Book with a cruise advisor (like us!)
We don’t just make a reservation—we help you choose the right cruise line, ship, cabin, and itinerary for your travel style, and we often unlock extra perks or savings.
2. Check your passport or ID early
Many cruises from the U.S. don’t require a passport, but we always recommend having one. It makes reentry easier and gives you more flexibility in case of emergencies.
3. Arrive the day before your cruise
Delays happen. Flying in the day before removes the stress and gives you a cushion in case of travel hiccups.
4. Don’t overpack
Cabins are well designed but compact. You’ll spend most of your time in swimsuits, coverups, and casual clothes anyway.
5. Pack a carry-on for embarkation day
Your main luggage may take hours to arrive at your room. Bring essentials like medications, sunscreen, a change of clothes, and anything you need to enjoy your first few hours on board.
Onboard Essentials
6. Explore the ship on day one
Take a walk around to get familiar with where everything is. This makes it easier to settle in and discover things you might have otherwise missed.
7. See the shows
Evening entertainment—like comedy acts, musicals, and live music—is often excellent and included in your cruise fare.
8. Order room service
Most cruise lines offer complimentary room service, especially for breakfast. It’s perfect for early port days or quiet mornings on your balcony.
9. Use the cruise line app
Most ships now have dedicated mobile apps that let you check daily schedules, view menus, chat with your group, and even book excursions.
10. Don’t miss the sailaway party
There’s something special about hearing the ship’s horn and watching the shoreline fade into the distance. It’s a great way to kick off the cruise.
Shore Days
11. Book excursions early
Popular excursions fill up quickly. We’ll help you pick the right ones and even give you advice on which ports are best explored on your own.
12. Bring small bills
Many Caribbean and Mexico ports appreciate $1 and $5 bills for tips, taxis, and small vendors.
13. Eat onboard before heading out
Most ships offer breakfast or lunch before you leave for shore. It’s a great way to save money and time in port.
14. Watch the time
Always be back on ship time, not local time. The ship will leave without you if you’re late.
15. Not every port needs a tour
Some ports—like Nassau or Mahogany Bay—are walkable with great beaches or shopping right near the pier. We’ll let you know which ones are worth wandering and which need a guide.
Food & Fun
16. Try the main dining room at least once
Even if you love the buffet, don’t skip the dining room experience. The food and service are fantastic, and it’s all included.
17. Consider one or two specialty dining nights
A steakhouse or sushi night can be a fun splurge. Some ships even offer chef’s table experiences that are well worth the extra cost.
18. Enjoy your balcony
If you booked a balcony stateroom, use it. Coffee or wine with an ocean view is one of cruising’s greatest joys.
19. Weigh the value of drink packages
They’re not for everyone. If you enjoy multiple cocktails, specialty coffee, or sodas per day, it may be worth it—but let us help you calculate before you commit.
20. Bring a refillable water bottle
You’ll thank yourself on long excursion days or after a few hours in the sun. Most ships have filtered water stations you can use.
The Extras We Wish Everyone Knew
21. Pack motion sickness meds—just in case
Even on the biggest ships, rougher seas can sneak up. We recommend packing Dramamine, SeaBands, or ginger chews just in case.
22. Don’t stress about formal night
Yes, you can dress up—but you don’t have to go full tux and gown. A nice sundress or button-up shirt is more than fine. And if formalwear isn’t your thing, the buffet is always an option.
23. Wi-Fi is improving, but still comes at a price
Many cruise lines are now using Starlink internet, which has dramatically improved onboard speeds and reliability. This new satellite system is far faster than traditional marine internet, allowing for video calls, streaming, and faster downloads on many ships.
That said, it’s still satellite internet—so it can be inconsistent depending on your location at sea. And most cruise Wi-Fi plans come with a cost. Packages range from basic messaging to full-streaming plans, so we always recommend choosing what suits your needs (or using the cruise as a chance to unplug).
24. Book your next cruise while onboard
Many cruise lines offer discounted deposits, extra onboard credit, or bonus perks if you book your next sailing before disembarkation. We can take over the booking and help with all the details after.
25. Don’t just cruise—cruise smart
The more you know, the better your experience. That’s why we’re here—not just to book your trip, but to help you get the absolute most out of every moment at sea.
